When Sivsagar Was Underwater — How Guwahati’s Packers and Movers Community Came Together

In July 2025, the Sivsagar district of Assam faced one of its worst flood spells in recent memory. Homes were submerged. Families were displaced. And when we — the packers-and-movers community of Guwahati — saw the news, we could not just watch.

Our work every day is about helping people move their belongings safely to a new home. This time, the movement had to be different: essential supplies had to travel from Guwahati to Sivsagar, urgently, to reach people who had lost almost everything.

A united community effort

Local packers-and-movers businesses across Guwahati pooled together money from our own pockets to organise a relief camp. Together we mobilised approximately ₹5 lakhs worth of essentials — dry food, drinking water, tarpaulins, medicines, hygiene kits and clothing — and arranged trucks and volunteers to deliver them into the affected zones of Sivsagar.

As one of the main organisers, I want to publicly thank every fellow business owner, driver, packer and helper who contributed their time, money and vehicles. This was not a marketing campaign. It was our duty as citizens of Assam.

Why "moving people" matters

When you spend your working life helping families move from one home to another, you understand that a home is not walls. It is memories, safety, dignity. And when a flood takes all of that away in one night, the least we can do is help people rebuild that dignity — one carton of supplies at a time.

Our late father Moni Chanda, who started our family transport work in 1980, used to say: "Mur lage betha nai pai — dash, dashi." A client’s belongings, treated as our own. That value guides us not just at work — but in moments like this.

Wider relief efforts across Assam

This wasn’t just our community. Across Assam, individuals and organisations mobilised to help flood-affected families. National media including The Hindu covered the wider Assam floods relief work. Foundations like Pioneer Foundation rushed aid directly to affected communities. Celebrities, industrialists and NGOs joined in — because Assam matters to every one of us.

What "help" really looks like on the ground

• Loading trucks with rice, dal, salt, cooking oil and drinking water
• Packing tarpaulin sheets to give displaced families temporary shelter
• Sending mosquito nets and basic medicines to prevent water-borne disease
• Driving relief supplies through half-flooded roads to reach interior villages
• Coordinating with local volunteers in Sivsagar for last-mile distribution

Every packing carton we normally use to move households — this time carried food and supplies. It felt right.

No. This was entirely a community-driven relief effort by multiple local businesses.
